Course Syllabus
- TITLE OF COURSE: NR1103 - Basic Pharmacology
- COURSE DESCRIPTION: Three credit hours (three contact hours per week). A theory course designed to introduce the student to basic pharmacologic concepts, reflecting current practices, and facilitating comprehension for practical application. Areas of emphasis include legal issues, drug classifications, indications of use, therapeutic response, action and adverse reaction, and appropriate nursing interventions.For each unit of credit, a minimum of three hours per week with one of the hours for class and two hours for studying/preparation outside of class is expected.
- PROGRAM AND/OR DEPARTMENT MISSION STATEMENT: The Nursing Program at Seward County Community College prepares competent practical and associate degree nurses to assist in meeting the health care needs of clients by delivering quality wholistic care.

- COURSE OUTCOMES: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Describe the major significant historical events in the development of pharmacology.
- Explain the difference between chemical, generic, and trade or brand drug names.
- Explain the purpose of the Controlled Substances Act.
- Describe the mechanisms of drug action including the pharmaceutical, pharmacokinetic, and pharmacodynamic processes.
- Discuss drug classifications noting indications of use, desired effects, potential adverse reactions, and appropriate nursing interventions of selected drugs.

- INSTRUCTIONAL AND RESOURCE MATERIALS: Lecture outlines, handouts, selected professional periodical readings, dosage calculations and terminology, and case scenarios'.
- METHODS OF ASSESSMENT:
- 70% - Unit Exams
- 20% - Accumulative Final Exam
- 10% - Discussion and Classroom Participation
- Grading Scale:
A = 93 - 100%
B = 84 - 92%
C = 75 - 83%
D = 74 & below
- SCCC Outcome #1 will be assessed and measured by class participation and written assignments indicating comprehension of material read.
SCCC Outcome #2 will be assessed and measured by written assignments and student presentations throughout the course.
SCCC Outcome #5 will be assessed and measured by the student's score on course examinations.
